ZARED HALBERK
second-born
RACE,Human
GENDER,Male
BATTLE ROLE,The heavily armored guy with a shield and sword who hits things and blocks things with said equipment.
SEXUALITY,Heterosexual, except for one time, but I don’t like to talk of that one time. In fact, ignore all talk of that one time, there were drugs involved and, well, yeah, crazy things happened.
AGE,Physically, twenty four. Mentally? Well it depends who you ask.
ALLIANCE,Y’know, that’s a really tricky question, all things considered. I mean yes there is the Human Champion and stuff, but really I just do what’s right. By me. I mean others might do what they think is right but it’s not to most, but my right is almost always in line with the right of other people.

APPEARANCE,
Zared stands at about average height, though his build is slightly more muscular than most. This would most likely be attributed to the fact that he typically wears full armor unless in a particularly casual environment (the tavern is one of his favorites). As such he could be seen wearing gold-gilded armor complete with his family crest emblazoned on the chestplate, or in a simple and comfortable tunic and shirt combination common among nobles.
As for his features, it wouldn’t be unwise to assume he takes care of himself. Cleanly shaven masculine jawline, aside from the beginnings of a beard growing on his chin, complete with hair that is typically slicked upward in perhaps a bit more of a cowlick then would occur normally. His eyes are brown and his features are simple, not exceptionally noteworthy outside of their perfect mediocrity; his is a face without flaws.
WEAPONS,Meat CleaverThis sword is not actually a meat cleaver. Far from it, actually. A great sword that Zared has to wield with both hands that can most often find itself strapped to his back, it has perhaps one of the weakest stories a weapon passed down in a family line can have. Quite simply, it’s the sword given to the second born of the head of the family. The sword itself has never had much of a story, as the second born in Zared’s family rarely became great, but Zared is quite fond of it. When it had come into his possession it had had a name, but as Zared practiced with it he began to call it his meat cleaver for whatever reason, and the name stuck with him.
ITEMS,Family ArmorThis armor isn’t family armor in that it’s passed down. Rather it’s referred to as family armor because it’s the armor given to those representing Halberk, typically guards and such. Zared has a set because, as second born to a noble family, he’s charged with the responsibility of watching over the safety of the estate. Or, more importantly, his older brother. Which Zared rarely does himself.
ABILITIES,Word of PowerZared has a fondness for reading and for words in general. He’s always been a student of literature, despite his duty as the family guard. Because of all the reading he’s done in his youth he has found some ancient arcane secrets locked away in his family’s library. A book written in a strange and arcane language, filled with words that Zared didn’t understand, but could feel the meaning for. It’s hard to explain. While he would find it impossible to relay their meaning to anybody or even say the word, he is capable of writing it out using a little bit of magic, causing effects to be applied to whatever he engraves the word to. The words cannot be applied to something large like a castle, but would instead apply to a limited area of the wall it was written on, for example. It takes one post to write, though multiple words may be written in a single post to a single object. Each word has a limited number of things it can be used on, and once this is exceeded the word will fade off of the first object it applied to and then continue down the list.
- Phase – Phase is Zared’s best way of describing this word, though it doesn’t incorporate everything it is capable of. Basically it makes the object it is engraved into incorporeal, yet still there, able to interact with organic material. Engraved into his sword, for example, he can still wield the weapon but the blade does not connect with inanimate objects, gaining the ability to pass through armor. Engraved into his own armor it becomes completely useless against physical attacks but all of his defense becomes magical, meaning magic spells lose a lot of their effect on him. Meanwhile more mundane objects may vary. He once engraved it on a cup of ale, for example, and suddenly found the contents of the cup spilled across his lap, having phased through the cup despite his ability to hold it. [Maximum: 2]
- Boom – contrary to the name, this ability does not create an explosion. Not in the traditional sense. Rather the engraved object will respond differently with a concussive blast outward, depending on how the object is used. Zared is not sure how the use is determined, but this is how it’s always been. Written on a weapon, the next attack from the weapon will cause a blast of concussive force upon impact that will add moderate damage to the attack. Written on his armor, his armor will respond similarly, except whenever something else impacts against it. If a sword smacks his armor it will be immediately deflected, though the impact itself may leave some bruising. Most mundane objects respond similarly, with a concussive blast equivalent roughly to a punch whenever they impact with something, but there is a different effect with paper, for some reason. If the word were to be written on paper, it would only respond once read, blasting the reader with the same force.
RACIAL ABILITIES,
Superhuman EnduranceLevel 3 - The human still flinches, but it is reduced. They might move back a bit from a direct hit but other than that, they'll be able to keep on trucking.
Mighty WindLevel 1 - If the human is killed, they will come back, hanging on by a thread. This only works once a thread.
HISTORY,
Zared was the second born son of a nobleman. His older brother had come along two years before, which had sealed Zared’s fate even before he was conceived. The Halberk family was a very traditional family. They had an estate in Castle Town with their own guard watching over the large amount of land, a share in many of the local businesses and even a spot in the court. Their position was so solid that Zared is technically in the line for the Hylian Crown, oddly enough, thanks to his great grandfather’s aunt’s husband or something along those lines. It was a distant stake, but it was there.
When Zared became old enough he began reading. Actually he started reading earlier than most kids, and gobbled up every book that came his way. He was satisfied with reading about puppies and kittens and other kid’s books, pretty quickly becoming at least a few years ahead of his time in reading material. Of course this was not the kind of plan his father had for him and shortly after he was able to get around on his own he was put into sword training. He was to be the right hand for his brother when he became head of the household. It was one of those convoluted family rules that dated too far back to be tracked.
Once Zared was of age he inherited his sword, which he called Meat Cleaver in a small bout of rebellion, from his uncle, who was his father’s younger brother. And so life went on, until he was about fourteen and his younger brother came along. As the third brother there wasn’t really much planned for him, so he was left to his own pursuits. He quickly took to spellcasting, interestingly enough, and Zared spent a lot of time with him in the library. Their older brother couldn’t really understand how the two could do so, but that was life.
Finally, at the age of seventeen, Zared’s father died. Heart failure. This left Zared’s older brother to inherit everything, but since their uncle was still alive, Zared didn’t have any duty just yet. Their mother was, naturally, kept on the estate as the widows were allowed and taken care of and all that. Zared really hated all the family traditions that were being followed. Fortunately his uncle took good care of himself, as you’d expect from someone destined to be a guard before they were even born, and had much longevity.
So as Zared ages he’s stuck waiting for his uncle to die, meanwhile training and helping run the estate guard here and there. Learning for when his uncle dies, though he rarely sticks around for these lessons. Their estate is near the heart of Castle Town, and a young twenty-something like Zared would be damned to be stuck in the walls of his family home. So he traveled, not far, but he traveled, and learned the city.
And that’s basically all there is to Zared’s tale thus far.
