There was a moment of silence. Then another. And another...
Until that moment of silence turned into a session of contemplation. Where in Din's fiery name was she? It began to dawn on the lone gerudo woman that she was lost. She couldn't make out where did she come from, and where she was going. Her bright eyes turned small, and beady as her heartbeat began to increase in velocity. She began looking at all corners of her vision trying to figure out where she was. Ok, she was in a forest. There were trees all around her, and there was grass beneath her feet. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary, right?
"Oh no," she started, "Oh no, no no no!" Her hands were quivering above her small chest as her whole body began to shake violently. Her legs felt like twigs ready to break beneath her weight. What was Maytag going to do?! She didn't know how to get out from there, and she was all alone. She began to sniffle~
No. I won't cry, she thought, biting her lower lip softly. I won't cry. I'm not going to cry.
She was taught to train her mind to overcome matters at hand. Repetition was the key to the whole deal with mind over matter. She kept repeating those thoughts, trying to stay positive. Interrupting her train of thoughts unfortunately was a pretty yellow winged butterfly that landed on the bridge of her nose.
Wait for it, "... KYAAAH!"
She began flailing like a complete psycho nut until the poor butterfly fluttered off her face. In the midst of her panic attack, she tripped, and planted her face into the grass. Five to ten seconds after regaining conscious, she pulled herself up, and burst into tears. Maytag began wailing to the top of her lungs~

... Home.
He hadn't been here in a while, and a while was a blatant exaggeration; he had been what, fifteen the last time he ventured into the Minish forest?
Trippy.
He knew his way around, obviously. Even if he hadn't grown up here, he was a bear. Didn't animals have some kind of amazing sense of direction or whatever? Not that it mattered. He could get in and out without blundering through the forest for days, so the technicalities were just some kind of fancy lining that he didn't really understand.
So Finn was just kind of walking around, cover pulled down low and his hands shoved in his pockets, his shoulders slumped in a perpetual moody-boy slouch. He wasn't really going anywhere; it wasn't like he was gonna run back to the village, and he had no desire to see his parents anyway. He didn't even know why the heck he was here in the first place.
"Stupid bear," he muttered to himself, and he was about to turn around and head back out of the forest when a cry cut through the peace of the forest.
His head shot up, and he stared in the direction of the scream like a deer in headlights. That sounded like a girl's scream, and the forest wasn't exactly the safest of places. There were bears here!
Finn began walking towards the sound, his long strides becoming faster as he broke into a run. Jumping over and ducking under branches and falled logs was effortless for him; mindless physical activity, right? He'd just bust through them, usually, but that took longer, and it was possible that the screamer was in danger.
He was so intent on finding the person that he didn't realize she was there until he tripped over the poor girl, landing directly on his face.
"Stupid bear," he muttered again, wiping the dirt off his face and rubbing his head. Then he blinked, swiveled his head, and abruptly realized that the extremely loud wailing had come from this red-haired girl.
Who was incredibly cute, even when crying.
A fierce blush creeping up his neck, Finn crouched in front of the girl, just kind of... staring at her.
"S-sorry about that, miss," he said, his deep, rough voice probably doing nothing to soothe her fears, whatever they were. "I heard a scream, and... are you okay?"

There was no point in wishing to go back home, because home didn't want her back. Nobody was going to come out looking for a banished gerudo woman, let alone one who couldn't fend for herself as a normal warrior from the desert should. Maytag didn't have a place where she belonged, or someone who'd take the time of day to pass a simple care about her. She was forever alone. She was absolutely useless. Incompetent to even breathe the air that filled her lungs with each cry she let out. Her tearducts were getting a real work out in just the few moments she began her crying fit.
Her cheeks were flushed bright pink fresh from crying. All she wanted was to find her way out of the forest; she didn't care how, but rather getting it done as soon as possible. The little crybaby felt helpless to save herself in this predicament. She wasn't fit to travel out these distant foreign places. Everything was strange, unfamiliar to the poor desert dweller and it confused her to no end.
Her train of thoughts were quickly thrown in a halt when she felt someone trip over her. Her crying ceased for a very brief moment before she started to feel pain from where a bruise was going to form. That hurt! Let's not forget to add that, along with being weak, she bruised like a banana as well~ She bit back from crying out loud but tears still poured out from her eyes uncontrollably. Her bright eyes turned over to the stranger that came on by, and froze up in absolute fear. Who was this man?!
Dear Din, he's talking to me, she cringed, Leave me alone! I... I need to find a place to hide! Maytag inched away when he asked her if she was ok. She gave a timid nod as an answer followed by inaudible murmurings; Maytag attempted to say she was fine, and ask if he was ok as well, but it probably came out as gibberish. What with not raising her voice loud enough for anybody to understand what she has to say~ Out of the corner of her eyes, she began searching out for places to hide, pacing the moment of her great escape.

His brow furrowed.
The girl nodded, which Finn took to mean yes, she was fine. But she didn't look fine, not in any interpretation of the word. Her face was all red and waterfalls were pouring from her eyes, and then there was the screaming and wailing from before... but she said she was fine.
Couldn't anyone ever be straight with him? Jeez. If she wasn't okay, then she should say that she wasn't okay. It was common sense; you didn't go on and on about how healthy you were when your arms were bleeding stumps and there wasn't any skin left on your legs.
And people said that he was stupid.
Finn sighed and sat as he normally would, took off his cover, ran a hand through his hair. He fished around in a pocket for a while, and eventually came up with a cigarette, which he promptly lit. He took a drag, careful to avoid blowing the smoke in the girl's direction, and raised an eyebrow at her, calm as could be. He wasn't about to let her wander off if she wasn't actually okay, which he was pretty sure she wasn't, so he would just sit there next to her, thanks.
"You sure 'bout that?" he asked, his blush beginning to fade. "'Cause you sure don't look okay."

If only people could pick up on subtle hints like body languages, and little motions to tell what intents lay dormant within one's mind. Alas, the world doesn't work the same way like it does in books. The gerudo needed someone that could read her mind, and understand her plights. Unfortunately, she wasn't that blessed, the gods above the Sacred Realm forsaking her with any bit of luck she may have. If she had any bit of luck on her it would be the sheer fact that she was lucky enough to even be born.
Maytag tried her best to slink away from the boy's company, but the second he sat down right next to her, it was crystal clear that she had no escape. She sniffled again. Her body shook a little, a nervous wreck at best, praying to Din that the boy didn't hurt her (again). May took a glimpse of him from the side noticing how he took out a cigarette, and took a drag. He... didn't look like he was going to hurt her. What was he asking again? Oh yeah, that's right, he was concerned about her well-being.
She lowered her head shyly. Her shoulders slouched a bit as she tried huddling her body within her sweater. If anything it was the only barrier she had to protect her, her stranger danger levels shooting up to the roof - metaphorically speaking, mind you~ Her mind was quick to conflict with her options unsure if she should trust him or not. It was much too soon to tell. She suppose though it would be wise to tell him the truth though about one thing. Tears slowly, but surely began to cease from falling from her glassy eyes.
"I'm... lost," she could barely make out. Hiccups escaped from her throat tempting her to burst back into tears again.

Unfortunately for the girl, Finn picked up on body language like a fish picked up flowers; that is to say, not at all. Well, that wasn't entirely true; he got it when someone was scared or happy or upset or something like that, but any deeper and he was just completely lost. So when she lowered her head and her shoulders hunched, the only thought that passed through his head was she is ridiculously cute.
Which, of course, caused another blush to creep onto his cheeks.
He turned his head to the side and took another drag on his cigarette, averting his gaze. Stupid bear, he told himself, ruffling his hair again. Just help the girl and move on.
Finn took a deep breath, abruptly realizing that the redhead had stopped crying. One problem solved, although it was no thanks to him. She still looked upset, though, and that was distressing for the soldier; emotions were not in his area of expertise, and he had no idea how to make her feel better.
He could barely make out her words, but once he did, he couldn't help but grin slightly. Now that he could help her with. Pushing himself to his feet, Finn brushed the dirt off his pants with one hand and crushed his cigarette with the other; not wanting to drop it on the forest floor, he put the thing in his pocket and prayed that it wouldn't make his clothes catch on fire. That would most definitely be awkward.
He extended a hand towards the until-recently-crying girl, his other hand automatically going behind his back in an at-ease position. "I can help you out, if you want," he offered, his blush still not entirely faded.

The redhead was not in her comfort zone. Then again this was Maytag we're talking about; when was she ever in her comfort zone? She was far too busy freaking out either mentally or quite literally to realize just how stressed out she really was. It didn't help any that taking a glance out of the corner of her eyes, it was rather... awkward between the two of them. Finn's eyes brought a bit of discomfort on her shoulders, she couldn't understand why it did so, but all she could explain in her head that they looked troubled. Burdened by the girl's presence, obligated to help her out so she would stop annoying him, and he could be on his way. He probably saw her as an nuisance~
She completely misunderstood his blush for red tint of annoyance. You know how some people get angry they turn red? It only fueled her assumptions that he was only there to help her out, and stop being an pesky little crybaby. It was probably for the better that it just worked out that way. He didn't want anything to do with her afterwards so she may as well get her problems over with, and carry on with her miserable life.
The soldier however caught her off guard when he started to get up. Her tear stained eyes blinked back a few times, concluding that he was probably ready to leave, but that wasn't entirely so. When he held out his hand for her, something began to bubble up inside of her, she inched back slightly unaware of what was going on. It was weird. Even though she didn't like him, his words came straight through to her. She looked back up to him with her bright eyes before turning them over to his hand. Her overly long-sleeve covered hand broke away from defense mode, ever so cautiously reaching out for his hand. "Are you... sure?" she asked with a mousy voice.
Before she knew it, her hand reached out, and placed itself within his grasp. The young gerudo used what little strength she had to help her stick-self up, and up off of her knees. He wasn't so bad... In that very moment, her eyes brightened up a bit, and her body felt light for a change. What was going on here~?

He felt bad for the poor girl, honestly. She was obviously upset at being lost, and while he really couldn't speak for her, Finn knew that he always got embarrassed when someone had to rescue him from being lost... which happened quite a lot, actually, especially in unfamiliar territory.
This wasn't unfamiliar territory, though. He could get out of here. Right? Right.
Finn was a straightforward man; he spoke his mind when his opinion was wanted, and he didn't make offers that he didn't want to keep. When he said he'd help the girl out if she wanted, he meant it, and he'd thought it was obvious that he meant it; therefore, her insecurity was bewildering to him. But then, when it came to girls, most things were bewildering to him, so he supposed it was nothing new.
"If I wasn't, then I wouldn't be offering, now would I?" he asked, and his grin grew ever so slightly wider when she extended her small hand to be enveloped within his larger one.
When she was on her feet, Finn took a glance around, his brow furrowing as he tried to figure out which direction he had come from. He knew that he had jumped over a bunch of logs and branches and stuff, so it had to be that way... right?
In his contemplation, he completely forgot that he was still holding the girl's hand.

Don't you just love mixed up signals? Maytag certainly didn't, and for good reason too. There was something going on between them, and she wasn't sure she liked the wavelengths he was giving off that were crossing paths with hers. The reverberations brought her on shaky grounds, and since she was a far cry from escaping, all she could do now was endure. The stressed redhead prayed with a wary heart that it would continue to look up from here. Hopefully, she wouldn't burden him too much with her presence, and leave him alone completely after she found her way out of this forest.
Her eyebrows shot up at his comment, her bright eyes glimmering brighter than normal as blood began to rush to her head. A smidge of red tinted her nose, traveling across the bridge from cheek to cheek. "I... suppose that's true..." she murmured sheepishly. Where was the best hiding place she could find? May felt like crawling into the furthest reach of the forest, and rotting away right now from the embarrassment she plunged herself in.
His up, and front attitude should have been expected, it should only come natural with his soldier uniform, and all however it put May-May in a puzzlement. It didn't take her long to try reconciling with her thoughts that he might not be a bad person in the least bit of the very word. All she knew at the moment was that she needed help, and he seemed like he wanted to so what did she have to lose from trying? Probably her life, but that didn't hold much worth to begin with so not like it really mattered.
Then it dawned on her. The young gerudo didn't even get his name. Would he give it to her? Oh, how she hated being so shy! "Um... name," she murmured, "What's your name?"
She, too, was totally oblivious of the fact that he was still holding her hand~

Finn continued to look around, and finally settled on a direction. It certainly looked the most disturbed; although there was an insane amount of logs and fallen trees lying around, many the branches sticking out from the ground and from the brush on either side of the path were snapped or broken. Yep, definitely the way he came from. He hoped.
"Alright, this way," he told the girl, and began walking in the direction he had chosen. But, after a single step, he felt an unexpected weight on his hand. Startled, he turned his head to look at his hand, and automatically a scarlet flush blossomed onto his cheeks.
"S-sorry about that," he stammered, pulling his hand away and scratching the back of his head. Alright, bear, calm down. Not that big a deal. Just calm the frick down already.
He took a deep breath, somewhat unnerved by the contact. It wasn't just that he had held her hand -- although that was most of it, admittedly -- but it was also how goddamn natural it felt. He didn't even realize until he had moved. Stupid bear.
He blinked at her question. Oh yeah. Names were rather important, so... introductions? "Finn Rider, at your service," he said, attempting to act cool to cover up for his freak-out before. "And yours?"

May's eyes followed carefully along with Finn's as he scouted the route towards their headed destination. Wherever that destination was, it mattered not to the redhead, as long as she was getting out of the forest in one piece, and for the most part in safe hands. When she took a look at the path he came from, she froze up, swallowing softly in perpetual fear of what laid before her eyes. Was it the soldier that created that wreckage? Without even realizing it, she began trembling again, ready to pass out at any given minute.
Tensed? May? Where in the Goddesses' golden name would give you that impression?
She could only pray that she was making the right decision when she accepted his kind offer. When it was made official that they were taking a designated route, she nodded her head quietly, minding her manners with her head tilted low so she wouldn't stare so much. She didn't want to annoy him by being rude or anything~ When he moved, it would seem that he noticed that their hands were still entwined together.
Oblivious little May didn't realize it until then as well and oh, how quickly her face flushed bright pink competing against Finn's tinted cheeks. "N-No," she replied to the best of her ability, "I-I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention... No harm done."
Under what would have been normal circumstances, May wouldn't have allowed him within ten feet before she would disappear, away from sight, and mind. Her heart began beating at an intense level - she panicked a little worried that she was going to have a stroke from how out of pace it was beating. All because of a few thoughts. The biggie being that she was holding hands with a guy! Automatically, she placed her arms back in front of her chest as if in a defensive gesture. Very bad habit of hers.
"Finn... Rider," she repeated, "I like it~" A small smile formed upon her lips actually rather pleased of his introduction. Maytag didn't even notice he was freaking out; she was far too concerned about her own paranoia to even realize it. "Oh! M-Maytag... my name is Maytag. Nice to meet you, Finn."
Was it just May, or was it getting warm all of a sudden~?

Oho, no. It was most definitely not just May; the poor bear was absolutely burning up, and he was flustered beyond belief. So what did he do about it? Why, he did what he always does in an awkward situation; Finn shoved his hands in his pockets and his shoulders slumped, self-consciously averting his eyes so that he wasn't looking directly at the girl.
What he couldn't help but notice, though, was that she put her arms across her chest, just as she had done before. She was so... anxious? Was that the right word? Regardless, she was one of the most nervous people Finn had ever met. It really made him wonder about what had happened to her. Weren't things like nervousness caused by some kind of extreme trauma or whatever?
It wasn't any of his business, he supposed, but he couldn't help but worry. She seemed so alone, so helpless...
Shaking his head to clear his mind, he smiled at Maytag, his blush flaring a bit when she said she liked his name. "Maytag," he said, half-musing. "Pretty. Do..." he hesitated for an instant, then rushed headlong into his question, just like he did with everything else in his life. "D'you mind if I call you May? It's... easier, y'know." Awkwardly he scratched the back of his head, then gestured in the direction of the path they were going to take. "A-anyway, we should probably go."
And so he started walking, automatically bounding from the forest floor to the rounded top of a fallen tree, not even realizing that he had just cleared what was easily a four-foot jump. Really, being ridiculously strong and dumb as an ox had some uses at times. Still, as he turned to look for May, he realized just how high up he was, and his brow furrowed slightly. Would... would she be able to make it up alongside him? Maybe it would have been better if he had just busted through on his way over; it would have been easier for May to get out. But he didn't want to scare her, so he couldn't break the tree now, so... oh, goddesses, Finn hated dilemmas.
Looking from the ground on May's side to the ground on his other side, he made up his mind and nodded briskly. He fell into a crouch and held out both arms towards May, the blush that had faded slightly burning up his neck again.
"S-so, um, if you, er, want some help... yeah. I can get you over, if you want."

Well, there was one thing they shared in common, and that was avoiding each others eye contact. Verbal communication was lacking in many aspects here. May couldn't help but sneak little glimpses out of the corner of her eye though. He looked so shy, but he was so cute when he tucked away his hands in his pockets, and his shoulders lowered. He didn't seem like a bad person at all. Sure, he was just as awkward as she was around people, but May felt like she could trust him. Not completely, but it was a start.
She's always been helpless. Lost without a cause. Another existent just lucky enough to be born on this earth... but her life was worthless. Maybe if she had a little more confidence, a little more strength, a little more of everything she wasn't right now... She could be a different person that everyone liked. What were the odds of that happening? Maytag knew who she was, and nobody would take interest in a stupid gerudo who couldn't even fight to save her own skin. All she knew how to do was freak out, and cry. Nobody wanted to be with a loser like her. Hell, she didn't even like herself that much either.
... waitaminute, did he just say her name was pretty? Blinking, May was completely caught up on that simple compliment that she almost lost track of what he was asking her. What did he say? Oh! He wanted to know if it was ok if he called her 'May' for short. Her smile widened a little noticing just how shy he got again. "Yes," she said happily, "You can call me May." It was... nice to have someone call her so casually like that. She was so used to being called other names. Stupid... Worthless. Pathetic. Self-conscious was an understatement when describing May's overall behavior towards the opposite gender.
Her bright eyes widened at the travel Finn made ahead of her. She paused in her tracks noticing the large tree fallen within their path as her companion made it up without breaking a sweat. Her brows furrowed down as a troubled expression painted her features. Could she make it on her own? May had some serious doubts about that... Though it would appear that Finn wasn't going to leave her to figure that out on her own. Maybe... just maybe he could help her, and not just in the sense that he was actually helping her over the fallen debris.
Eagerly she took both of his hands, and with all of her strength began to pull herself up over to his side. She was not at all a strong woman, but for the first time in a long time she was trying to keep up with the bear minish. "Thank you, Finn," she said merrily. "Thank you for everything..."
